The cultural community in Colombia is mobilizing to support heritage sites and museums following a significant earthquake that recently impacted the region. A report from the Colombian Ministry of Culture indicates that at least 40 protected sites and dozens of other cultural assets sustained damage during the seismic event. The government has authorized emergency measures to stabilize these structures and protect valuable artifacts from further harm. These actions include reinforcing cracked walls, securing roofs, and removing elements that pose a risk of collapse. The preservation of these historic locations is considered a top priority for the nation's cultural heritage. Beyond government efforts, the private sector and individual artists have stepped in to provide assistance. The Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín has pledged to donate a portion of the proceeds from its recent Mamm Fest 2026 to the Museo La Tertulia in Cali. The Museo La Tertulia remains closed to the public as staff members work to assess the damage and support their local community. Other institutions, such as the Museo de Arte de Pereira, have also been forced to close their doors after suffering severe structural failures. In a show of solidarity, more than 25 galleries and 130 artists have launched a collaborative initiative called Arte por Colombia. This ongoing online sale has already raised over 575 million Colombian pesos, which is approximately $187,000. All funds generated from this project are being directed to organizations that are assisting people and cultural sites affected by the disaster. This collective response highlights the importance of community and shared responsibility in protecting cultural history during times of crisis. The dedication shown by these artists and institutions underscores the resilience of the Colombian arts sector. As recovery efforts continue, the focus remains on both the physical restoration of buildings and the long-term support of the communities that rely on these cultural spaces.
