In the rapidly growing city of Bengaluru, India, water scarcity has become a significant challenge for residents and public institutions alike. To address the depletion of groundwater, local communities and organizations have turned to innovative rainwater harvesting solutions. One notable project involves the installation of specialized collection systems at local schools, designed to capture and store rainfall that would otherwise go to waste. By channeling water from rooftops and grounds into abandoned borewells, these sites are being converted into functional recharge pits. This process helps replenish the local aquifer, providing a sustainable source of water for the surrounding area. The initiative is supported by local community members and partners like GANT, who provide the necessary technical expertise and resources. The system utilizes specialized filters to ensure that the captured rainwater is clean before it enters the underground water table. This simple yet effective technology has the potential to harvest approximately 371,992 liters of water annually, depending on local rainfall patterns. Evidence of the project's impact is already visible, with data showing that over 119,969 liters of rainwater were successfully recharged by October 2023. Rajanna, a local resident known as the village Waterman, reported a two-hour increase in daily borewell yield just three months after the system was completed. This measurable improvement in water availability has encouraged parents and community leaders to advocate for broader adoption of the technology. The success of this model has prompted local self-government officials to consider replicating the system in other public institutions across the region. By focusing on decentralized, community-managed infrastructure, the project demonstrates how local action can contribute to long-term urban water security. The initiative highlights the importance of public participation in managing essential natural resources in a changing climate.
