Abomey is a city of profound historical significance in central Benin, serving as the former capital of the powerful Kingdom of Dahomey. Today, it stands as a living testament to West African heritage, blending its royal past with modern efforts to preserve its unique cultural identity and architectural treasures.

1. Founded in the 17th century by King Houégbadja, Abomey served as the centralized capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey for nearly 300 years. The city was the seat of power for a succession of twelve kings who ruled over the Fon people until the end of the 19th century.
2. The Royal Palaces of Abomey are a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of ten distinct palaces spread across 47 hectares. These earthen structures are renowned for their intricate bas-reliefs that depict the military exploits and historical narratives of the Dahomean monarchs.
3. Abomey is famously associated with the Agojie, an elite all-female military regiment often referred to by Europeans as the Amazons. These fierce warriors were a central pillar of the Dahomean army and have served as a major inspiration for modern cultural depictions of West African history.
4. The city is home to the Musée Historique d’Abomey, which houses an extensive collection of royal regalia, sacred objects, and traditional appliqué tapestries. This museum provides a comprehensive timeline of the kingdom's rulers, from Dako in 1620 to the final king, Béhanzin.

7. The Agongointo-Zoungoudo Underground Town, located just 9 kilometers from the city center, offers a unique glimpse into defensive architecture. This site features a network of bunkers and living quarters situated 10 meters below ground, originally designed as a hideout for warriors.
8. Vodun is a recognized and deeply rooted religion in Abomey, serving as a direct ancestor to the Vodou traditions practiced in Haiti and other parts of the diaspora. The city remains a vital center for priesthoods, initiations, and the maintenance of ancestral royal cults.
9. The architecture of the royal palaces includes sacred spaces such as the Djexo, which houses the spirit of the king, and the Adoxo, which serves as the royal tomb. These sites are maintained with traditional materials to ensure the preservation of their spiritual and historical integrity.
