Located in the remote southern region of Basilicata, Matera is one of the most extraordinary and ancient urban landscapes in the world. Known as the 'City of Sassi,' it features a complex network of cave dwellings carved directly into limestone cliffs that have been inhabited for thousands of years. Once considered a national embarrassment due to extreme poverty, Matera has undergone a miraculous transformation into a vibrant UNESCO World Heritage site and a premier cultural destination.

1. Matera is widely recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited human settlements in the world, with evidence of human presence dating back to the Paleolithic era. Archaeological findings suggest that people have lived in these limestone caves for over 10,000 years, making it a living museum of human history. This incredible longevity places it alongside ancient cities like Jericho and Aleppo in terms of historical significance and urban continuity.
2. The heart of the city is defined by the 'Sassi di Matera,' two districts of ancient cave dwellings carved directly into the calcarenite rock of a deep ravine. These structures are not merely simple caves but represent a complex urban system where houses, churches, and workshops are stacked on top of one another. The roof of one house often serves as the street or the floor for the dwelling above it, creating a fascinating vertical labyrinth that challenges modern architectural concepts.
3. In 1993, Matera became the first site in southern Italy to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The organization recognized the Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches as an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement that has evolved over millennia. This international recognition was a major turning point that helped preserve the city's unique architectural heritage and sparked a global interest in its preservation.
4. Despite its current beauty, Matera was once known as the 'shame of Italy' during the mid-20th century. Following the publication of Carlo Levi’s book 'Christ Stopped at Eboli,' the world became aware of the extreme poverty, malaria, and high infant mortality rates in the Sassi. At that time, families lived in cramped, dark caves alongside their livestock without running water, electricity, or proper sanitation.
5. The dire living conditions led the Italian government to pass a special law in 1952 that mandated the forced evacuation of the Sassi. Approximately 15,000 residents were relocated to new, modern housing projects on the outskirts of the city, leaving the ancient core abandoned for decades. This mass exodus turned the Sassi into a ghost town until a group of young locals began a movement to restore and repopulate the area in the 1980s.
6. Matera’s dramatic transformation reached a pinnacle in 2019 when it was named the European Capital of Culture. This prestigious title brought millions of visitors and significant investment to the region, cementing its status as a premier global destination for history and art lovers. Today, many of the once-derelict caves have been converted into high-end boutique hotels, art galleries, and gourmet restaurants that blend ancient stone with modern luxury.
7. The city is home to more than 150 'rupestrian' or rock-hewn churches, many of which are hidden within the cliffs of the Murgia plateau. These sacred spaces were often established by Byzantine monks fleeing conflict in the East during the Middle Ages, seeking refuge in the remote canyons of Basilicata. Many of these churches still contain stunning, well-preserved frescoes that blend Eastern Orthodox and Western Catholic artistic traditions in a unique cultural synthesis.
8. Because of its timeless and biblical appearance, Matera has served as a frequent stand-in for ancient Jerusalem in major motion pictures. It was the primary filming location for Mel Gibson’s 'The Passion of the Christ' and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 'The Gospel According to St. Matthew.' More recently, its narrow streets and dramatic staircases were the backdrop for high-speed car chases in the James Bond film 'No Time to Die,' showcasing its versatility as a cinematic set.
9. To survive in the arid landscape of the Basilicata region, ancient residents developed a sophisticated water management system that was ahead of its time. They carved massive underground cisterns, such as the Palombaro Lungo, which could hold millions of liters of rainwater collected from the roofs and streets. This intricate network of canals and tanks allowed the community to thrive for centuries despite the lack of natural springs or rivers nearby.
10. The local culinary culture is deeply rooted in 'cucina povera,' or the cuisine of the poor, with the iconic Pane di Matera at its center. This sourdough bread is made from local durum wheat and is famous for its thick crust, airy interior, and unique shape that resembles the surrounding mountains. It was traditionally stamped with the family's initials before being baked in communal ovens to ensure everyone received their own loaf, a practice that highlights the community's historical social structure.
