Dimitris Kokotas, Renowned Greek Singer and Composer, Dies at 57

Early Life and Musical Roots

Dimitris Kokotas was born in Athens in 1968. As the son of the legendary Greek singer Stamatis Kokotas, he was immersed in the music industry from a young age. Rather than remaining in his father's shadow, he forged a distinct path, eventually becoming a prominent voice in the Greek music scene.

Career and Accomplishments

Kokotas made his professional recording debut in February 1994 with the solo album Diadoseis (Rumours), which featured music and lyrics by the acclaimed songwriter Phoebus. The album was a commercial success, selling approximately 30,000 copies and achieving gold status in Greece and Cyprus. He followed this with his 1995 platinum-selling album Conscience, which solidified his status as a major recording artist. His third solo album, released in 1997, became his most commercially successful work, reaching platinum status with over 80,000 copies sold.

Throughout his career, he collaborated with numerous industry icons, including Marinella, Kaiti Garbi, Angela Dimitriou, Antypas, Vasilis Karras, and Konstantina. In 2013, he participated in the international tour A Tribute to the Legends, performing alongside Haris Varthakouris, Grigoris Bithikotsis, and Stelios Dionysiou to honor the legacies of their famous fathers.

Personal Life and Final Years

The death of his father, Stamatis, in 2022, deeply affected him, and he often spoke of the comfort he found in performing his father's songs. In March 2024, while preparing for a return to the stage and participating in the television show J2US, Kokotas suffered an acute heart attack and cardiac arrest. He remained hospitalized at Georgios Gennimatas Hospital for more than two years until his passing on August 25, 2026.
