A Life of Public Service

Édouard Balladur, a prominent French politician who served as Prime Minister of France from 1993 to 1995, died in Paris on August 31, 2026, at the age of 97. A central figure in the Fifth Republic, Balladur was remembered by President Emmanuel Macron as a "demanding, level-headed, and devoted public servant" who dedicated his life to the nation.

Early Life and Career

Born on May 2, 1929, in İzmir (Smyrna), Turkey, to a family of French businessmen, Balladur moved to France and pursued a rigorous education, graduating from the prestigious National School of Administration (ENA) in 1957. He began his career as a junior official in the Council of State. His political ascent began in 1964 when he became an advisor to Prime Minister Georges Pompidou. Following Pompidou's election to the presidency, Balladur served as under-secretary general and later secretary general of the presidency until 1974.

Political Accomplishments

Balladur was a key figure in the French right-wing, serving as Minister of Economy and Finance from 1986 to 1988, where he oversaw the privatization of major state companies. In 1993, he was appointed Prime Minister during the "second cohabitation" under Socialist President François Mitterrand. His tenure was marked by efforts to address high unemployment and public deficits. He later mounted a notable, though ultimately unsuccessful, bid for the presidency in 1995, a campaign that famously strained his long-standing friendship with Jacques Chirac.

Notable Works and Legacy

Beyond his political roles, Balladur was an author who contributed to political discourse, including his 2009 work For a Union of the West. He was often characterized by his calm, technocratic approach to governance. His legacy is defined by his long-term influence on the French right and his role as a mentor to future leaders, including former President Nicolas Sarkozy, who described him as a "mentor and a friend."

Personal Life

Balladur married Marie-Josèphe Delacour in 1957; the couple had four sons. His wife preceded him in death in December 2025 at the age of 91. A private mass service has been planned to honor his memory.
