Drink of the Day: Knob Creek 9 Year (USA)

Knob Creek 9 Year stands as a defining expression of American whiskey, known for its robust profile and commitment to traditional production methods. This bourbon is celebrated for its deep, complex character that results from an extended maturation process in charred oak barrels. It remains a staple for enthusiasts who appreciate the bold, full-flavored style that helped revitalize the bourbon category in the late twentieth century.

Company History

The history of Knob Creek is inextricably linked to the James B. Beam Distilling Co., a legacy that spans seven generations of the Beam family. The family lineage in American distilling began in the late 1700s when the Boehm family arrived in the colonies and eventually settled in Kentucky to produce whiskey. In 1992, sixth-generation Master Distiller Booker Noe launched the Small Batch Bourbon Collection, which included Knob Creek, to challenge the industry trend toward lighter, softer spirits. Today, the brand continues to operate under the stewardship of the Beam family, with Fred Noe and Freddie Noe upholding the standards established by their predecessor.

Product History

Knob Creek 9 Year was created by Booker Noe to revive the pre-Prohibition style of bourbon, which emphasized higher proof and longer aging. The spirit is crafted from a traditional mash bill consisting of 75 percent corn, 13 percent rye, and 12 percent malted barley. It is aged for a minimum of nine years in new, deeply charred American white oak barrels, which allows the liquid to extract significant color and flavor from the wood. The product is bottled at a commanding 100 proof, or 50 percent alcohol by volume, to ensure that the robust, caramelized sweetness of the distillate remains intact.

Review

Independent professional reviews consistently highlight the quality and value of this expression. Breaking Bourbon notes the refined and complex palate that balances the high proof, while other industry observers frequently praise its accessibility and depth. Based on aggregated ratings from sources including Breaking Bourbon, Fred Minnick, and Tasting Table, the spirit maintains an average score of 88 out of 100. This consensus reflects its status as a reliable, high-quality benchmark for premium Kentucky bourbon.
