Drink of the Day: Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year

Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year is widely considered the signature expression of the prestigious Van Winkle family line. This Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey is celebrated for its complex profile and its connection to a century of distilling tradition. It remains one of the most sought-after spirits in the world due to its limited production and meticulous aging process.

Company History

The Van Winkle legacy began with Julian P. Van Winkle, Sr., who started his career as a traveling salesman for W.L. Weller and Sons. In 1935, he founded the legendary Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, where he pioneered the use of a wheated mash bill. Following his death in 1965, his son Julian P. Van Winkle, Jr. managed the firm until its sale in 1972. In 1981, Julian P. Van Winkle III revived the family brand, eventually entering a landmark partnership with the Buffalo Trace Distillery in 2002 to ensure the continuation of his family's exacting standards.

Product History

The 15-year expression is crafted using the exclusive Van Winkle family wheated recipe, which replaces traditional rye with wheat to create a softer, smoother spirit. The whiskey matures for 15 years in deep-charred heavy oak barrels, which are carefully selected from the heart of the aging warehouses at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, Kentucky. This long, undisturbed aging process allows the bourbon to develop its signature notes of leather, oak, and complex fruitiness. The final product is bottled at 107 proof, maintaining the high quality that the Van Winkle family has overseen for generations.

Review

Professional critics consistently praise the 15-year expression for its balance and depth. According to reviews from Distiller, Breaking Bourbon, and The Whiskey Wash, the spirit maintains an average rating of 96 out of 100. These sources highlight the bourbon's elegant aroma of caramel corn and vanilla, as well as its smooth, spicy finish.
