Global Military Spending Reaches Record $2.887 Trillion in 2025

Global military expenditure reached a record high of $2.887 trillion in 2025, according to the latest data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). This figure represents a 2.9 percent increase in real terms compared to the previous year. The rise marks the 11th consecutive year of growth in worldwide defense spending, highlighting a sustained trend of increased investment in armed forces. Over the past decade, global military spending has climbed by 41 percent. While the growth rate in 2025 was lower than the 9.7 percent surge recorded in 2024, the upward trajectory remains consistent across many regions. The global military burden, which measures the share of gross domestic product (GDP) devoted to defense, rose to 2.5 percent in 2025, up from 2.4 percent the year prior. This shift indicates that governments are increasingly prioritizing military security within their national budgets. The average share of government spending dedicated to the military stood at 6.9 percent globally. On a per-person basis, world military spending averaged $352 for every individual on the planet. The 15 largest military spenders in the world all increased their budgets during this period. The United States remains the world's largest spender, though it experienced a slight decrease in its total expenditure for 2025. Other major contributors to the global total include China, Russia, Germany, and India. Together, these nations and other top spenders continue to shape the international security landscape through significant procurement and modernization efforts. Researchers at SIPRI note that the economic and social trade-offs of these high spending levels could have long-term effects on societies. As nations allocate more resources to defense, they often do so at the expense of other budget areas.
