Early Life and Beginnings

Ivan Gudelj was born on September 21, 1960, in Imotski, FPR Yugoslavia, and was raised in the village of Zmijavci. He began his football journey at the local club NK Mračaj in Runovići, where he was coached by Marinko Boban. His immense talent was quickly recognized, leading him to join the youth ranks of the prestigious HNK Hajduk Split in 1975.

Career and Major Accomplishments

Gudelj spent his entire professional playing career with Hajduk Split, becoming an enduring icon of the club. Between 1976 and 1986, he featured in 362 matches across youth and senior levels, scoring 93 goals. A versatile defensive midfielder, he was instrumental in the club's success, helping them secure the Yugoslav Championship title in 1979. His exceptional performance on the pitch earned him the title of Yugoslav Footballer of the Year in 1982.

On the international stage, Gudelj earned 33 caps for the Yugoslavia national team, scoring three goals. He represented his country at the 1982 FIFA World Cup and the 1984 UEFA European Championship. Notably, he was appointed captain of the national team at the age of 22, a testament to his leadership and maturity.

Illness and Transition to Coaching

Gudelj's promising playing career was tragically cut short at the age of 25 after he collapsed during a match against Red Star Belgrade. It was later determined that he was suffering from a hepatitis infection, which forced his early retirement from professional play. Following his playing days, he transitioned into coaching, where he managed several clubs including Uskok, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Vorwärts Steyr, and Hajduk Split. He also served as the manager for the Croatia U17 national team from 2006 to 2013.
