He began his distinguished career in the film industry as an assistant and screenwriter, collaborating with notable directors such as Louis Malle on Zazie dans le métro (1960) and Vie privée (1961). His early work as a writer gained significant recognition, particularly for the 1964 caper That Man from Rio, which earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Directorial Accomplishments

Rappeneau made his feature directorial debut in 1965 with A Matter of Resistance, a film that achieved both critical and commercial success. Following a hiatus, he returned to directing in 1971 with Les Mariés de l’an II, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo. From 1975 onward, Rappeneau focused on writing exclusively for his own projects, including Le Sauvage (1975) and Tout feu, tout flamme (1981).
