Early Life and Education

King Harald V was born on February 21, 1937, at Skaugum, Norway, the son of King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha of Sweden. He held the distinction of being the first prince born in Norway in 567 years. During his youth, he experienced the upheaval of the Nazi occupation of Norway, which forced his family into exile in the United States.

Career and Accomplishments

Harald V ascended to the throne on January 17, 1991, following the death of his father. His 35-year reign was marked by his efforts to modernize the Norwegian monarchy while serving as a unifying figure for the nation. A dedicated athlete, he was a skilled yachter who achieved significant success in the sport, including a silver medal at the 1982 World Championships and a gold medal at the 1987 One-Ton World Championships. He also held the rank of captain in three branches of the Norwegian Armed Forces.

Personal Life

In 1968, he married Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, after a nine-year courtship that overcame significant royal controversy. The couple had two children, Princess Märtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon, the latter of whom has succeeded him as King Haakon VIII.

Legacy

At the time of his death, King Harald V was the oldest-reigning monarch in Europe. He passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m. on August 28, 2026, at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, following a battle with haemolytic anaemia. He is remembered for his commitment to duty, his sense of humor, and his ability to provide stability to Norway during times of national tragedy and change.
