M. Enamul Huq, Former Inspector General of Police, Dies at 88

Early Life and Education

M. Enamul Huq was born on January 2, 1938, in Godagari, Rajshahi, in the Bengal Presidency of British India. He pursued his higher education at the University of Rajshahi and the University of Dhaka, laying the academic foundation for his future career in public service.

Career and Accomplishments

Huq served as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Bangladesh Police from October 16, 1991, to July 8, 1992. His distinguished career included serving as the Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and as the principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sarda, Rajshahi. Beyond his domestic service, he was a notable figure in international law enforcement, serving as the only elected member of Interpol from Bangladesh between 1988 and 1992. He also contributed his expertise to various United Nations agencies and served as a member of the Law Commission of Bangladesh.

Literary Contributions and Legacy

In addition to his police career, Huq was an accomplished writer who authored approximately 14 books and frequently contributed columns to national and international publications. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. Following his passing on August 30, 2026, at a hospital in Dhaka, a state funeral was held at the SI Shiru Miah Auditorium in the Rajarbagh Police Lines. He was laid to rest at his family graveyard in Godagari upazila, Rajshahi.
