Naseer al-Chaderchi, a veteran Iraqi lawyer, statesman, and leader of Iraq's National Democratic Party who served on the country's post-2003 transitional council, died on September 12, 2026, in Amman, Jordan. He was reported to be between 90 and 93 years of age at the time of his passing.

Early Life and Family Legacy

Naseer Kamil Rifaat al-Chaderchi was born into one of modern Iraq's most distinguished political and intellectual dynasties. His father, Kamil al-Chaderchi (1897–1968), was a seminal figure in Iraqi political history, founding the National Democratic Party and serving as a foremost leader of the country's democratic movement before the Ba'athist era. His older brother, Rifat Chadirji, achieved international acclaim as an influential architect and author. Raised in Baghdad, al-Chaderchi pursued higher education in law, establishing himself as a lawyer, commercial businessman, and prominent agricultural landholder.

Political Career and Major Accomplishments

Following decades of Ba'athist rule and the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003, al-Chaderchi revived his family's historic political tradition by serving as secretary-general and leader of the National Democratic Party. In July 2003, he was appointed as a member of the 25-member Iraqi Interim Governing Council, established under the auspices of the Coalition Provisional Authority to lay the institutional framework for post-war Iraq.

As an active member of the Governing Council, al-Chaderchi played a key role in negotiating and signing the Law of Administration for the State of Iraq for the Transitional Period (the TAL) in March 2004, which served as Iraq's interim constitution. Throughout his tenure, he advocated for democratic governance, the rule of law, and a pluralistic, non-sectarian civilian state.

Notable Works and Civic Roles

Beyond his institutional work on the Interim Governing Council, al-Chaderchi led diplomatic and administrative committees tasked with state reconstruction and electoral planning. As head of the National Democratic Party, he sought to preserve the legacy of Iraq's pre-Ba'athist liberal democratic tradition through policy manifestos, public advocacy, and legal reforms designed to safeguard civic liberties and property rights.

Personal Life

A lifelong resident of Baghdad, al-Chaderchi maintained private commercial enterprises and managed agricultural estates alongside his legal practice. In his later years, he divided his time between Iraq and neighboring Jordan, where he received medical treatment prior to his death in Amman.

Legacy

Al-Chaderchi is remembered as a bridge between Iraq's early 20th-century democratic aspirations and its turbulent post-2003 transition. His leadership of the National Democratic Party and his participation in drafting Iraq's transitional legal framework established him as a steadfast proponent of secular democracy and institutional continuity in contemporary Iraqi history.
