Pierre Neuville, a celebrated Belgian professional poker player and former toy industry executive, died on August 26, 2026, at the age of 83. His death was confirmed by representatives in the poker community, who noted that he passed away following a long battle with prostate cancer. Known affectionately as the "Serial Qualifier," Neuville became an international symbol of longevity and optimism in the competitive gaming world.

Early Life and Education

Pierre Neuville was born on January 2, 1943, in Montigny-le-Tilleul, Belgium. He discovered his passion for card games at the age of 14 and continued to hone his skills while studying at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1963 to 1969. Although he was a regular poker player during his university years, his initial professional path focused on the broader gaming and toy industry.

Entrepreneurial Career

Following his graduation in 1969, Neuville designed a board game named after his close friend and legendary cyclist, Eddy Merckx. This venture led him to establish a successful toy company, which he eventually sold to the American toy giant Hasbro in 1982. Neuville remained with the corporation as a Vice President for the next ten years, overseeing significant growth. In 1993, he shifted his focus to personal consulting, advising high-profile clients including golf legend Gary Player and Hollywood actor Kevin Costner. He officially retired from his business enterprises in 2008 to pursue poker full-time.

Professional Poker and Major Achievements

Neuville’s second act in poker began in earnest at age 64. He gained worldwide fame for his uncanny ability to qualify for major tournaments via online satellites, setting a world record by qualifying for 23 consecutive European Poker Tour (EPT) Main Events. This feat earned him the nickname "The Serial PokerStars Qualifier" and the title of "Online Qualifier of the Year" in 2012.

In 2015, at the age of 72, Neuville made history as the oldest player to reach the final table of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, as part of the elite "November Nine." He eventually finished in 7th place, earning a career-high prize of $1,203,293. His tournament resume included two runner-up finishes in EPT Main Events (Vilamoura 2009 and Copenhagen 2012) and two second-place finishes in WSOP bracelet events (2014 and 2016). In March 2015, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the European Poker Awards, where he famously declared, "The best is still to come!"

Personal Life

Neuville was a long-time resident of his hometown, Montigny-le-Tilleul, and later Knokke-Heist. He was a vocal advocate for the cognitive benefits of poker for seniors, participating in medical studies that suggested the game helped maintain mental acuity. He is survived by his wife, Claudine, and their three children.

Legacy

Pierre Neuville leaves behind a legacy of perseverance and grace. By achieving his greatest successes in his seventh and eighth decades, he provided an inspiring counter-narrative to the youth-dominated landscape of professional poker. He amassed over $5 million in live tournament earnings and remained a fixture at the tables until the final year of his life, embodying his belief that it is never too late to pursue one's dreams.
