Early Life

James Bone was born on September 22, 1949, in Bridge of Allan, Stirling, Scotland. Raised in Fallin, he was a product of the local football scene, beginning his youth career with the Fallin Boys Brigade and Airth Castle Rovers. He attended Stirling High School, where his early talent for the sport began to flourish.

Career and Accomplishments

Bone enjoyed a prolific career as a professional striker, most notably with Partick Thistle, where he made 107 appearances and scored 50 goals. His professional journey included stints at Norwich City, Sheffield United, Celtic, St Mirren, Heart of Midlothian, and Arbroath, as well as international experience with Toronto Blizzard and Hong Kong Rangers. He earned two caps for the Scotland national team, scoring in a 1972 World Cup qualifying match against Denmark. Among his career highlights, he was part of the Partick Thistle squad that famously defeated Celtic 4-1 in the 1971 Scottish League Cup final and helped St Mirren secure the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1980.

Managerial Career

Following his retirement as a player, Bone transitioned into coaching and management. He served as player-manager for Arbroath and later managed Airdrieonians, leading them to the First Division title in 1991. His international management career included a successful tenure with the Zambian club Power Dynamos, where he won the Zambia Premier League and the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1991. He also held managerial roles at East Fife, Stenhousemuir, and served as caretaker manager for Partick Thistle in 2007.

Jimmy Bone passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025, at the age of 75. He is remembered by the football community as a dedicated professional and a "much-travelled" figure who left a lasting impact on the clubs he served. His son, David, paid tribute to his father's "great strength" following his passing, and numerous former clubs, including Hearts and St Mirren, issued statements honoring his contributions to the sport.
