Rukidi IV of Tooro, World's Longest-Reigning 'Youngest King,' Dies at 34

Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the cultural leader of the Tooro Kingdom in Uganda and once the world’s youngest reigning monarch, died on August 27, 2026, at the age of 34. His death was confirmed by the Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who announced that the King passed away at approximately 10:00 p.m. following a sudden illness while in the United States.

Early Life and Education

Born on April 16, 1992, at the Royal Palace in Kabarole, Uganda, King Oyo was the son of King Patrick David Mathew Kaboyo Olimi III and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa. Following the sudden death of his father in August 1995, the three-year-old prince was crowned as the 12th Omukama of Tooro on September 12, 1995. His coronation earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest reigning monarch in the world.

During his minority, the King was raised by a board of regents that included his mother, Princess Elizabeth Bagaya, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. He received his early education at the Aga Khan Primary School in Kampala and the Kampala International School. He later moved to the United Kingdom, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Management from the University of Winchester in 2013.

Over a reign spanning 31 years, King Oyo transitioned from a symbolic toddler-king to a prominent global advocate for health and environmental conservation. The King was a member of the Babiito dynasty, which has ruled Tooro since its founding in 1822. He was predeceased by his father, King Patrick Olimi III, and his sister, Princess Celia Komukyeya. He is survived by his mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, and his sister, Princess Ruth Ntugwerigi Komuntale. While the King remained unmarried at the time of his death, the Kingdom administration has assured the continuity of the crown, noting that an heir has been designated in accordance with royal tradition.
