A Life Dedicated to the Performing Arts

Serhat Mustafa Kılıç, a celebrated Turkish actor, television personality, and singer, passed away on September 5, 2026, at the age of 51. His death occurred in Istanbul, marking the end of a prolific career that spanned three decades across theater, cinema, and television. Known for his profound range and dedication to his craft, Kılıç left an indelible mark on the Turkish cultural landscape.

Born on July 8, 1975, in Ankara, Kılıç was a native of Malatya. He pursued his passion for the arts by enrolling in the Bilkent University Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, where he studied theater on a scholarship starting in 1994. This academic foundation served as the springboard for a career that would eventually see him become one of the most recognizable faces in Turkish entertainment.

Early Career and Theatrical Mastery

Kılıç began his professional journey by working with various state and private theaters, honing his skills as both an actor and a director. During his time with the Diyarbakır City Theaters, he not only taught acting but also directed the production Barış Adası. His commitment to the stage remained a constant throughout his life, even as he achieved widespread fame on television.

His theatrical prowess was perhaps best exemplified by his work in the play İntiharın Genel Provası, which he performed with the Istanbul City Theaters starting in the 2009-2010 season. In this production, Kılıç portrayed four distinct characters, a performance that earned him a nomination for the Best Musical and Comedy Actor at the 14th Afife Theater Awards. He continued to receive critical acclaim in later years, winning the Best Comedy Actor award at the 2025 Üstün Akmen Theater Awards for his role in the one-man show Kırık Plak.

Screen Accomplishments and Notable Roles

While his roots were in the theater, Kılıç achieved significant national and international recognition through his work in film and television. He appeared in numerous high-profile projects, including the military series Söz, which received an International Emmy Award nomination. His filmography also includes a memorable performance as Imam Hamdi in the award-winning film Winter Sleep, directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

His versatility allowed him to transition seamlessly between genres, from the comedic role of Ergun Sarı in the long-running series Seksenler to more dramatic turns in projects like Veda, where he played Salih Bozok. Beyond acting, Kılıç was an entrepreneur in the arts, founding the production company Cats&Dogs in 2012. In 2014, he furthered his commitment to education by establishing his own acting school, where he provided training in dance, singing, and writing to the next generation of performers.

Legacy and Final Farewell

The passing of Serhat Kılıç prompted an outpouring of grief from colleagues and fans alike, who remembered him as a dedicated artist and a loyal friend. A memorial ceremony was held at the Harbiye Muhsin Ertuğrul Stage, where long-time friend and colleague Emre Karayel paid tribute to their 30-year friendship. The event was attended by many prominent figures from the Turkish arts community who gathered to honor his contributions to the stage and screen.

Following the memorial, Kılıç was laid to rest in Ankara, with a funeral service held at the Ahmet Hamdi Akseki Mosque on September 8, 2026. He was subsequently interred at the Karşıyaka Cemetery. His legacy endures through his extensive body of work and the many students who benefited from his pedagogical efforts at his private academy. He remains a respected figure in Turkish cinema, remembered for his technical precision and his ability to inhabit complex characters with ease.
