The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore has officially awarded a contract to launch a pilot program for autonomous buses. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Transport to integrate self-driving technology into the nation's public transit network. The project aims to expand mobility options for commuters while testing the reliability of autonomous systems in real-world urban environments. The contract, valued at approximately $8.14 million, marks a significant step in the country's long-term transportation strategy. The selected consortium includes MKX Technologies Pte Ltd, Zhidao Network Technology (Beijing) Co. Ltd, and BYD (Singapore) Pte Ltd. These companies will collaborate to provide the necessary hardware, software, and fleet management systems required for the pilot. The scope of the agreement also covers electric charging infrastructure and ongoing maintenance support. The pilot will focus on two specific public bus services, identified as route 400 in the Marina Bay area and route 191 in the one-north district. These routes were chosen to provide a controlled yet active environment for testing the autonomous vehicles. The trial is scheduled to run for an initial period of three years. During this time, officials will monitor the performance of the buses and the effectiveness of the remote operations systems. This pilot follows a competitive request for proposal process that was launched on January 27, 2025. The LTA received four distinct proposals, which were evaluated based on the maturity of the technology and the operational capabilities of the applicants. By testing these vehicles on active public routes, the government hopes to gather valuable data on how autonomous technology can augment existing transit services. This project complements other ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Transport to test autonomous vehicles in areas like Punggol. As global interest in electric and autonomous public transport continues to rise, Singapore remains focused on refining its infrastructure to support these innovations. The success of this three-year trial could influence future policies regarding the large-scale deployment of self-driving buses across the city-state.
