Producer History

The distillery was originally founded in 1825 by brothers John and George Rate under the name Milton Distillery. In 1837, the brothers established a more substantial facility nearby, which was registered as Glenkinchie. The site faced significant challenges, including a closure in 1853 when it was converted into a sawmill following bankruptcy. It was later revived in 1881 by a group of Edinburgh-based investors led by Major James Grey. In 1914, the distillery joined Scottish Malt Distillers, which eventually merged into the company now known as Diageo in 1925. Today, the distillery is recognized as the Lowland home of Johnnie Walker and features a museum dedicated to the history of Lowland whisky.

Product History

Glenkinchie 12 Year replaced the distillery's previous 10-year-old core expression. It is crafted using two of the largest stills in Scotland, which, combined with the use of worm-tub condensers, helps preserve a distinct texture in the spirit. The whisky is matured primarily in ex-bourbon casks, which contribute to its signature light and approachable character. Because the vast majority of the distillery's output is utilized for blending, the 12-year-old remains one of the few consistently available single malt releases from the brand.

Taste Profile

Appearance: Medium straw gold.

Aroma/Nose: A springtime bouquet featuring green apple, unripe pear, and lemon zest, evolving into notes of white blossoms, hay, honey-vanilla, and digestive biscuits.

Palate: Soft and light with flavors of vanilla pudding, honey, and apple compote, followed by hints of orange peel, lemongrass, peach, and a subtle, dry grassy character with ginger and white pepper.

Finish: Short to medium in length, notably dry, with lingering notes of apple peel, mint, lemon cake, and a crisp green tea bitterness.

Overall Character: A delicate, floral, and refined Lowland malt that serves as an excellent aperitif.
