Spirit of the Day: Springbank 15 Year
A deep dive into Campbeltown's benchmark single malt, rich in tradition and sherry character

Springbank 15 Year
Springbank 15 Year Old is a world-renowned Campbeltown single malt Scotch whisky crafted by J & A Mitchell and Company Ltd at the historic Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland.
Producer History
Springbank Distillery sits on the southern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula in western Scotland. The Reid family founded the operation in 1828 before the Mitchell family acquired ownership in 1837. Today, J & A Mitchell and Company Ltd remains an independent, family-owned enterprise. In the 19th century, Campbeltown earned the reputation of "Whisky Capital of the World," boasting roughly thirty active distilleries. Economic headwinds during the Great Depression, the closure of key export routes, and domestic challenges led to the closure of nearly every facility in the town. Springbank persevered by retaining traditional, hands-on production methods rather than cutting operational costs.
The facility stands as a rarity in modern Scotch whisky making because it conducts 100 percent of the production process on-site, spanning floor malting, brewing, distillation, aging, and bottling. J & A Mitchell also produces Hazelburn, a triple-distilled, unpeated whisky, and Longrow, a double-distilled, heavily peated expression, alongside the eponymous Springbank line. In 2000, the company acquired the historic Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown, reopening it in 2004 to bottle whisky under the Kilkerran brand and securing Campbeltown's legal status as a recognized Scottish whisky region.
Product History
Springbank 15 Year Old forms a cornerstone of the distillery's core lineup, offering an older, heavily sherried contrast to lighter expressions in the catalog. Springbank's production process uses lightly peated barley dried on the distillery's own malting floors, turned manually by workers using traditional wooden rakes. The spirit undergoes a unique 2.5-times distillation method, combining low wines and feints across wash and spirit stills to build a robust, textured new-make spirit.
Unlike many modern commercial bottlings, Springbank does not add caramel coloring or employ chill filtration. The 15 Year Old matures completely in oak casks previously seasoned with Spanish sherry, allowing it to develop dense fruit, spice, and dark leather characteristics while preserving the natural salinity and coastal smoke inherent to Campbeltown distillates. The spirit is bottled at an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 46%.
Taste Profile
Appearance: Deep amber with mahogany highlights and slow, oily legs.
Aroma/Nose: Rich dried fruits, dark raisins, and figs mingled with maritime brine, soft peat smoke, cured meats, leather, and dark chocolate.
Palate: Full-bodied and viscous with flavors of stewed fruits, toffee, warming baking spices, orange peel, sweet tobacco, and gentle earthy peat.
Finish: Long, warming, and slightly dry, featuring lingering wood smoke, sea salt, toasted oak, and bitter dark chocolate.
Overall Character: A dense and complex maritime single malt where heavy sherry-cask influence balances naturally against oily texture, coastal salinity, and earthy smoke.

Serving Guide
Glassware: Glencairn or tulip-shaped whisky glass | Serving temperature: Room temperature (65°F–68°F / 18°C–20°C) | ABV: 46%
Serving Suggestions
- Neat: Pour into a Glencairn glass and let rest for 10 to 15 minutes to allow the sherry sweetness and coastal aromas to unfold fully.
- With a Few Drops of Spring Water: Adding two or three drops of clean, room-temperature water opens the bouquet, mellowing the alcohol strength and releasing sweet malt and citrus accents.
- On the Rocks: While connoisseurs typically enjoy it neat, pouring it over a single large, clear ice cube offers a refreshing presentation that highlights chocolate and oak tannins.
Food Pairings
- Mature Blue Cheese: The creamy texture and salty sharpness of Stilton or Roquefort pair seamlessly with the dried fruit and maritime notes of the whisky.
- Roasted Game and Smoked Meats: Venison, roast duck, or smoked brisket harmonize with the peat smoke, leather, and spice drawn from the sherry casks.
- Dark Chocolate Desserts: High-cocoa dark chocolate truffles or tortes enhance the orange, toffee, and cocoa flavors found on the palate.
- Charcuterie and Cured Ham: Thinly sliced prosciutto or jamón ibérico complements the oily mouthfeel and natural sea-salt finish of Campbeltown whisky.
