Uzbekistan and India Establish 30-Day Visa-Free Travel Agreement

Uzbekistan and India have officially agreed to implement a 30-day visa-free travel regime for their citizens. This significant policy shift was announced by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev following high-level bilateral negotiations with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The move is designed to streamline cross-border movement and provide a foundational step for business personnel and tourists alike. Both leaders view this initiative as a key component of their broader effort to elevate relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. By removing traditional visa barriers, the governments hope to foster closer societal ties and encourage more frequent travel between the two countries. The agreement includes plans to launch joint tourist routes, host reciprocal cultural weeks, and organize film festivals to celebrate the shared heritage of both nations. Officials from both countries are currently drafting a specialized roadmap to guide the diplomatic rollout of these new entry rules. Bilateral trade between Uzbekistan and India surpassed $1.3 billion last year, marking a 33% increase. Leaders have now established an ambitious target to reach $5 billion in annual commercial exchange by 2030. During the first seven months of 2026 alone, bilateral trade totaled $698.7 million. The shared economic agenda includes strengthening joint ventures across multiple high-value sectors. Targeted industries for future collaboration encompass energy generation, pharmaceuticals, healthcare services, consumer electronics, jewelry manufacturing, and agriculture. The extraction of critical minerals also remains a priority for both governments as they look to deepen their industrial integration. This visa-free regime is expected to facilitate the rapid travel options necessary for business leaders to negotiate and manage these emerging cross-border projects effectively.
