Elmina is a historic town located on the Atlantic coast of Ghana, serving as the capital of the Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem District. Renowned for its deep historical significance, the town is home to the oldest European-built structure in sub-Saharan Africa and remains a vital center for local trade and tourism.

1. Elmina was originally known as Anomansah, a name meaning "inexhaustible drink" or "perpetual," reflecting its unique geographical position on a peninsula between the Benya lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. The name "Elmina" itself is derived from the Portuguese word for "the mine," highlighting the region's historical importance as a source of gold.
2. The town is home to the iconic Elmina Castle, also known as São Jorge da Mina, which was constructed by the Portuguese in 1482. It holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving European building in sub-Saharan Africa and stands as a somber memorial to the transatlantic slave trade.
3. The construction of the castle began after an agreement between the Portuguese navigator Diogo de Azambuja and the local ruler, known as Caramansa. Although the local leader initially expressed reservations about becoming neighbors with the Europeans, he eventually granted permission for the fortress to be built.
4. In 1637, the Dutch successfully besieged the Portuguese-held castle by bombarding it from a nearby hill. Following their victory, they established the fort of St. Jago on that same hill to prevent future attacks and turned Elmina into the headquarters of the Dutch West India Company.
