Max R. Basheer AM, a towering figure in Australian rules football administration, died on September 1, 2025, at the age of 98. Born in Adelaide in 1927 and raised in the timber town of Kalangadoo, South Australia, Basheer became one of the most influential leaders in the history of the sport.

Early Life and Career

Born to Lebanese immigrants in 1927, Basheer initially pursued a career in law. His involvement in football began as a player in the early 1950s, though his path shifted toward administration after he was denied a clearance to play for Sturt. He began his administrative journey in 1954 as an honorary solicitor to the South Australian Amateur Football League.

Major Accomplishments and Legacy

Basheer served as the president of the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) for 25 years, from 1978 to 2003, making him the longest-serving president in the league's history. He was instrumental in the development of Football Park (AAMI Stadium) and played a pivotal role in securing the entry of the Adelaide Football Club and the Port Adelaide Football Club into the Australian Football League (AFL). His leadership was defined by his ability to guide the SANFL through significant periods of transition and growth.

Awards and Recognition

In recognition of his immense contribution to Australian football, Basheer was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1988. He was granted SANFL League Life Membership in 1972 and AFL Life Membership in 1996. He was further honored with induction into the South Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
