Competing in the men's bantamweight boxing division, he achieved a victory over Hempala Jayasuriya of Ceylon before being defeated by the eventual silver medalist, Song Soon-chun of South Korea. Following his Olympic appearance, Bath transitioned to professional boxing, where he secured three victories in his first four bouts before retiring from the ring in 1958.

Beyond his boxing career, Bath was a dedicated educator. From 1958 until his retirement in 1995, he served as a physical education, gymnastics, and boxing instructor at Ballarat Grammar School. His commitment to his school and community extended to his work as a landscaper for the school's grounds. In recognition of his enduring impact on the community, the RG Bath Swimming Centre was named in his honor shortly before his retirement.
